News Letter

Every three months our Chair, Ron Weaver, will issue a News Letter summarising the previous 3 months and outling future events

T&DR Newsletter - January 2018

Happy New Year to everyone. Despite the days being short at the moment there are still many opportunities to get out and about and we hope that we can tempt you with the new programme.

The programme covering the period February – April 2018 is now attached. There are still a few gaps, primarily on the longer walks so if you can offer a walk or would like to try leading a walk for the first time do let Karen Bridgman know (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or phone 07411502532). One event that the Group will be taking an active part in again is the Dawlish Walking Festival which runs from Friday 20 – Sunday 29 April 2018. John Cousens will be offering two walks, one of which will be the 18 mile T&D Way and other leaders are currently considering options. The final programme is likely to include around 40 walks, with full details expected to be available from February 2018. All walks will start from the Dawlish Tourist Information Centre.

Our AGM took place on Sunday 5 November 2017 and I was delighted to be voted on as your new Chairman. I look forward to meeting you all and helping to steer the Group forward. Can I also use this opportunity to remind you of the Devon Area AGM which is coming up on Saturday 10 February 2018 and will be held at the Buckfast Abbey Conference Centre. Full details can be found at http://www.ramblers.org.uk/go-walking/events-index/2018/february/devon-area-agm.aspx would encourage you to attend as it provides an opportunity to find out what is happening across the whole of Devon. In addition to the official business there is a 4 mile morning walk starting at 10.30 am. The guest speaker in the afternoon is the renowned local historian John Risdon who will speak on the ‘Middle Dart’, which should be good.

Committee Work

Your Committee held its first meeting of the year on 18 January 2018. At the meeting John Cousens set out the progress that had been made to try and get an overgrown route up into the forest above Mamhead opened up as a permissive path. I know that a number of you offered to help with the clearance work so as soon as we have approval to proceed we will be touch again.

Social Events

By the time you receive this Newsletter our Annual Lunch will have taken place (26/1/2018) and I look forward to hearing what you think about a lunchtime rather than an evening event and if we should repeat next year.

Also in Anne’s absence Mary is offering a walk and lunch on Thursday 1 March 2018 from Haven Banks to the Double Locks. For those who haven’t been before the Double Locks is at a delightful location on the Exeter canal just outside the city. Have a look at the menu and think about what you might like! http://www.doublelocks.com/. Full details of the day are not yet available but if you would like to go please can you email Mary on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or leave a message on 01626 776464.

We of course have two holidays for this year, our first which Anne McCallister is arranging to the Lake District in June, with 15 Members already booked on, and a second, which Karen Bridgman is arranging, to Chamonix in September. If anyone has questions about either of these holidays please contact Anne or Karen direct.

Another social/walk activity that is in its early stages of planning is a coach trip to Bude on Sunday 10 June 2018, which Mike Strickland has kindly offered to arrange. We hope to offer two walks, an easier and harder, but there will also be opportunities for friends and family to come along and spend time on the beach or alongside the canal. Do put the date in your diary now and as soon as we have more details we will be in touch.

Devon Impact Statement

Along with the attached/enclosed walk programme you will also find a copy of the Devon Impact Statement. If you remember this was introduced last year and replaced the lengthy Annual Report and aims to give an overview of achievements across Devon. In particular I would draw your attention to a new walk called ‘The Franklin Totnes Trail’, which has been devised by the Totnes Ramblers and is a 6.75 mile circular waymarked walk around Totnes. You can download the trail via the following link file: http://www.ramblers.org.uk/go-walking/group-finder/areas/devon/groups/totnes/franklin-totnes-trail.aspxhttp://www.ramblers.org.uk/go-walking/group-finder/areas/devon/groups/totnes/franklin-totnes-trail.aspx Claire is actually leading a tea shop walk on 7 April which will take in 3.5 miles of the route so why not try it......and you will also note that our very own Tony Wilson won the photo competition and you can see his winning entry above the note ‘From the Chairman’. Many congratulations Tony!
